Education

I earned my Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Missouri - at the world's oldest School of Journalism. Later, I earned my Master of Science in International Affairs from The New School (in New York City), concentrating in Conflict and Security.

Experience

I’ve been an American foreign correspondent for 20 years, reporting from 30 countries. As a journalism educator and Writing Specialist, I’ve taught students and professionals on four continents: from New York to Hong Kong, from Prague to Lesotho. If you want to study at a U.S. or U.K. university, you have one chance to effectively "sell" yourself: through the Personal Essay/Personal Statement. But don't worry: I'm here to help, as your Writing Coach. I moved to China one year ago, from southern Africa, where I was a Foreign Correspondent, Health Journalism trainer, and Communications Consultant. I currently teach International Journalism at three of China's finest universities: Renmin University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, and Hong Kong Baptist University, where I'm a seven-time Visiting Scholar and teach "Foreign Reporting from Hong Kong" in its International Journalism program. I'm also senior trainer of a Foreign Correspondent Training Course in Prague - where I've led 25 groups through our reporting project, including six groups of Chinese student-journalists. For a sense of my methodology, the journalism-training academy of Deutsche Welle – the global German broadcaster – recently published my two-chapter guide to international reporting in its "Beyond Your World" training handbook. I'm delighted to now be living in China, tutoring both international and Chinese students on "How to Write a Winning Personal Essay for College Admissions." I recently guest-lectured on this topic to grad-school-bound Chinese guests at the U.S. Embassy in China, and I'm currently a Writing Coach for one of China's leading international high-school networks, working with the students of Dulwich College Beijing, Dulwich-Shanghai, and Dulwich-Suzhou. If you're not in Beijing, no problem: I could serve as your Writing Coach remotely, via Skype.
